Why QPDF exists
Almost everyone handles PDFs that should not be passed around: tax slips, bank statements, contracts, medical forms, identity documents, client files. Yet the quickest way to compress or merge a PDF is often to upload it to a website you know nothing about.
QPDF offers the same everyday tools — compress, merge, split, convert, sign, redact and more — without the upload. The software runs inside your browser, your file is processed on your own computer or phone, and the result is saved straight back to your device.
Who it is for
QPDF is a general-purpose toolkit for anyone who works with PDFs. Its privacy-first design is especially useful for people who handle other people’s confidential documents — lawyers, paralegals and legal assistants, immigration consultants, accountants, notaries and small businesses — as well as for anyone preparing personal paperwork such as applications, tax records or student files.
How it is built
QPDF is built on BentoPDF, an open-source, client-side PDF toolkit, together with other open-source engines such as PDF.js, pdf-lib, qpdf, PDFium, CoherentPDF, PyMuPDF, Ghostscript and Tesseract. QPDF adds its own design, organization, offline support and privacy hardening, and hosts every engine itself rather than loading it from third-party networks. The complete source code is available under the GNU AGPL-3.0 — see open-source licences.
