About Bates Numbering

Bates numbering gives every page in a production a unique sequential identifier. QPDF continues the sequence across multiple files and lets you set a prefix, suffix, starting number and number of digits.

How to use it

  1. Select your PDFs, or drag them onto the drop area.
  2. Arrange the files, then set the prefix, start number, digits and position.
  3. Apply and download the numbered files.

Your file stays on your device

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your file is read from your device, processed in memory, and saved back to your device — it is never uploaded to QPDF or anyone else. Once this page has loaded, the tool also works with your internet connection switched off.

Good to know

  • Check your court’s or tribunal’s rules for required format and placement before producing documents.
  • Numbers are added to the page content, so apply Bates numbering after all other page changes.
